Identify what is moving the soil
Look for the pattern before choosing the material. Wave action tends to cut near the waterline; concentrated runoff can carve channels from above; saturated soil can slump; and a steep or disturbed bank may fail differently from a gradual, vegetated slope.
Photograph the shoreline at similar lake levels when possible and note changes after storms, heavy boat traffic, or upland drainage events. The goal is to see whether the bank is being attacked from the water, the land, or both.

Control water coming from above
A protected waterline can still fail if roof runoff, drive drainage, or an uphill swale continues cutting through the bank. Shoreline work should be coordinated with upland grading, collection, controlled discharge, vegetation, and erosion protection where concentrated water reaches the slope.
Some sites need a combined approach rather than a single hard edge. The appropriate mix depends on the shoreline classification, bank geometry, erosion forces, environmental conditions, and current permit requirements.
